Education
In partnership with the APEX Museum and other sponsoring organizations, The Sweet Auburn Theatre Company regularly performs it’s “Talking Back to Youth” Living History Program to audiences. These entertaining and educational performances are based upon the real lives of prominent participants in the struggle for equality, as well as everyday citizens of the past who made a difference in the lives of those around them. Performers are required to “build” a character from the ground up, based on background study and personal interpretation – grounded in historic fact. Performers essentially become “re-enactors” as they take on the spirit and persona of the Living History character. The audience is invited to participate and learn by asking the character questions about their life experience. Through this process, we address our commitment to keep the history of African Americans alive beyond the typical February Black History Month experience.
